According to gov.uk, public bodies spend around £300bn per year on public procurement in the UK. Following Brexit, the public procurement sector is in a transition phase but keeps on following the guidelines set out in the EU directives that have been implemented in UK legislation in 2015.
Till date, public procurement in the UK is still governed by the Public Contracts Regulations that took effect in February 2015, implementing EU legislation into national law. However, a new public procurement act is in preparation and is expected to become effective by October 2024.
After Brexit, the “Trade and Cooperation Agreement” governs the relations between the UK and EU. Additionally, the UK became a member of the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA), granting companies from other GPA member states wide access to its procurement market.
